Words cannot describe how brilliant this film is. I want to build a time travel machine so I can go into the future and buy the DVD so I can watch it over and over. That’s how good 300 was. 300 is based on Frank Miller’s comic book of the same title, and much like his big screen adaptation of Sin City this captures the essense and feel of Miller’s work. Zach Snyder has created a masterpiece. Imagine Sin City meets Gladiator and you have 300.
300 is about the battle of Thermopylae, you’ve got 300 Spartans and 700 Greeks going up against a million Persians. In reality historians estimate it was more like 300,000 Persians, but that’s still a huge number to go up against. King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, is forbidden to go to war against the Persians by the High Priests, but he defies their decree and goes to meet the Persians at Hells Gate, or Thermopylae as it’s known in Greek. Their actions would have a profound impact on their fellow Greek City-States, leading to a unified Greek and the Greek era or prosperity.
The battle sequences through out the film are so over the top they’re amazing. The fighting and killing are operatic while the slow-mo sequences are masterfully punctuated and staged. The backgrounds are all done with cgi, but they blend in so well that it adds to the movies atmosphere. It really has the look of Millers books and it’s as if the pages just come to life. There’s so much to spoil, but I don’t want to do any of that so I will just say this… GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
